KINTSUGI

for JAN the Journal Vol. 11

Editorial portraiture + food

Kintsugi is the traditional Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, silver, or platinum. This method celebrates the imperfections and flaws of the broken object, considering them as part of its history and beauty. In this series of portrait collages, kintsugi is metaphorically represented by cuts and tears in paper, which reveal the stories of different relationships strengthened by the act of sharing food.

These food relationships include the Tredoux kid brothers, who share a love for ice cream sundaes and Hawaiian pizza. Creative business partners, Jana and Koos, often mistaken for romantic partners, strengthen their friendship through juice cleansing together. The Edwards twins bond over their love for cereal and milk, even in adulthood. Father and son duo, Ricki and Danillo Turulli, share a mentor / protégé relationship over Italian cuisine, but have a hard time agreeing on just one style. Finally, long-married couple Notice and John create precious family time by sharing traditional African meals.
